Telangana Bans New Borewells for Non-Drinking Purposes in Hyderabad
Amid falling groundwater levels, the government will supply treated STP water to construction sites from November 1 and restrict borewell permissions to drinking water needs.

The Telangana government has banned new borewell permissions for construction and other non-drinking purposes in Hyderabad amid severe El Niño impacts and falling groundwater levels. Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said permissions would be limited to deepening existing borewells for drinking water needs.
From November 1, treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be supplied to construction sites through green water tankers. Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju has also directed officials to prepare contingency plans for water and power management, citing a sharp decline in groundwater levels, particularly in Rangareddy district.
